I have a 1985 Series III XJ6 that won't start. Had it out for a ride one night and it ran fine. Came back home and patked it. Ever since I can't get it started. If it sits for a while the first time you try it wil runf ora couple of seconds and then shut down. After that no matter how many times you try it will just turn over and not even try to run.

Just to help avoid possible confusion and mis-diagnosis, I should point out that, on the car in question, the fuel pump *will not* operate by simply turning the key "on".

The fuel pump circuit is segregated into two legs---starting and running. For starting the fuel pump circuit is powerd up by voltage from the starter relay *when the key is turned to "start" *. A very easy way to check this is to put the gear shift into "D" and then turn the key to "start" to activate the circuit. You should be able to hear the fuel pump run but, because of the neutral safety switch, the start itself will not engage.

As the motor begins to fire and micro-switch inside the air flow meter powers up the circuit.

Todd. ou have to start with the basics, check for a spark at the plug wire ends; put a screwdriver in the end and hold the shaft close to the cyl head while someone turns the engine on the starter. As for fuel have someone turn the key on and off ( no need to turn it over) yoiu should feel the pulse in the fuel rail the injectors are all connected to. Then follow the faulty circuit!
