Dear Colleagues,

I'm experiencing a real problem with my brake system. Over the past year I have replaced my Master, power booster (twice, recycled part) and rear brake cal. I have recently lost power in my brakes again!!! And, I'm getting that familiar Woossshhhh sound from my brakes as they are being depressed. Could this be another power booster issue? If so, what could be causeing me to blow them. Could this just be an issue of needing to bleed the brakes. Any suggestions would be helpful.

Thanks,

Ted

mine is a 1984 too and I have not had any brake booster problems, but if I do, I would not use recycled, salvage, or used Brake System parts, only new, maybe rebuilt if the rebuilder is reputable. I would recommend the same procedure that I would follow: bite the bullet and rebuild the entire system with new components, flushing and back-flushing all hoses and lines with air pressure before securing each, and stay away from Silicone fluid, use Castrol Dot 4 only. Shop around, prices vary incredibly from one vendor to another for the same identical parts. A reputable shop might do the work for about the same cost for parts plus their labor and you have a warranty.

Two "recycled" power brake boosters ? Does that mean "used" ?

If so, maybe you should consider getting a rebuilt unit?

There's is nothing remotely exotic about the braking system on a Ser III XJ6 so I would't be too inclined to look for any sort of peculiar faults.

If you removed the booster and opened up for a look-see as to the exact failure mode or area, it might help reveal the root cause of the problem. Of course, putting it back together can be tricky but you can always send it to a rebuilder.
