My 30+ year old ignition system could possibly benefit from the new ignition technology now available. I'm thinking of the new pertronix unit with their matching coil which I understand replaces the Opus amplifer, balast resistor, and the dated and heat worn inards of the distributor.
Has anyone used this on the s3 v12 and/or care to comment?

Hello James
I have just replaced the original system on my 74V12 with the upgraded unit from SNG Barrat. It works very well and I am very happy with the investment.

I did some checking and found out some interesting information. Apparently, the Pertronix for the V-12 is new. Looks like a good unit, and I know others who have used Pertronix in 6 cyl. applications and love them. Assuming the price is right, sounds like a good alternative.

Pertronix for xke v12
I would like to know what all you had to do to insstall the pertronix. Do you have wiring sketches? What did you do to make the tach work properly?

Pertronix for V12 E type
James,
I have not heard of this conversion working on V12 E-types. I know that Pascal Gadamer converted his ignition using either a Crane or MSD setup. But I haven't heard of anyone doing it with a Pertronix unit. Also, SNG Barratt sells a conversion unit that replaces the distributor, amplifier, coil and wiring and converts it to the later HE setup used in the later XJS's. I know several people who did that conversion and it works extremely well.
If you are making the change and replacing the guts in your distributor, be sure that the mechanical advance is working. On the V12, it is notorious for having problems. It's a good time to pull it out and rebuild it, and be sure that it is properly lubricated, considering how hot it gets down there.
Please post a report here and let us know which conversion you end up doing and how it works out. Any details on the project would be helpful to others.

Hello,
I too am considering this upgrade for my 72 XKE. Is the Petronix upgrade hard to install? Does SNG Barrat include detailed instructions?
Thank you,
