Hi everyone,

I'm a "nubie" to jags and forums so I'll try not to bore you all about how much I love my xj6. Of course, I have been listening to every possible sound that eminates from the car for the last week. All was wonderful - is wonderful - but last night while the car was in park, headlights on, I stepped on the brake and heard a loud click. The click was so loud that it's vibration could be felt while my hand rested on the center console. Step on the brake - loud click, put it in drive and stepped on the brake no click.
Any thoughts????

Thanks

ED

Hi Ed,

Thanks for your input. I have not had any additional problems either as a result of the "clicking." I agree at some point I will need to get to the bottom of it, so if you find out anymore information please do let me know.

Thanks,

Hi David,

Sorry so long in responding. I don't check the FORUM as often as I should.

I wish I could be of help but mine has clicked for a few months now and (knock, Knock,) nothing has happened yet.

It probably has to be fixed though. I can't imagine that any "electrical" click from a Jaguar can be normal or not lead to some future problem.

I'll address your question to Doug Dwyer, the fellow that responded to me earlier in this string of replies, and see if he knows. If I get an answer I'll email you with it.

I have a 97 XJ6 and have the same issue and was aware that it is the gearshift interlock, but is this something that needs to be fixed, or something that the car does?

I notice it does it more when it is cold.

Yeah, my money's still on the shift interlock solenoid. The rapid fire action suggests a loose connection....

Hi Doug,
Thanks for your thoughts on the "clicking" -it sounds very logical. Of course, as with most strange noises coming from cars, what it did yesterday isn't exactly what it did today. Today it made the same click in park but then it started to make the clicking noise in rapid fire - click, click, click, click, while in drive as well. As much as I was hoping to discover a specific event, like tapping the brake or turning the AC on and off that might set it off, I was unable to pinpoint exactly what starts it clicking. It lasted for about 15 seconds or so and then stopped. A few minutes later it did it again and then stopped again. I drove quite a bit today and it never did it again after the first 15 minutes or so. Do you think it could still be the solenoid, as you suggest, but with some sort of short or loose connection, etc.??

Again, thanks for your help.
Ed.

My off the cuff guess...and that's all it is.....would be the "shift interlock solenoid"

This device, if your car has one (and I'll wager it does), would prevent the gearshift from being moved out of "P" unless the brake was depressed. I've heard some on various cars that were quite loud. Press the brake, the solenoid activates, gear lever is released, and away you go......

Once the transmission is in gear the solenoid is disabled, hence no noise heard/felt with the car in "D".
