i have a 68 fhc with dual strombergs, and i'd like to change to triple carbs. don't know whether to use triple su's or triple webers. seem to be about the same cost. i'm intersted in street driving, not racing. anyone have any experience, comments?

I can't speak about the suitability of Webers for street E Types, but I used to tune cars with Webers, including 140's and 150's (a loooong time ago) and Webers are way less likely to get out of tune than are SU's. Harder to get them dialed in, because they are harder to synch, but once they are set they are set forever, or just about. But you're likely to see a loss of economy, because the power is so easy to use. I'm interested in this, because I just bought a 1969 with dual Strombergs, and I have two really nice DCOE 40's sitting in my basement. I'm thinking of changing over myself, although with gas at $.90 per litre, I don't know.....

thanks for the help. i did find a really great weber tuner in wallingford, ct, so i'm on the fence. my car does have a hotter cam and an aluminum flywheel.

Ken,

My $.02 -- Go with the triple SU's. I have them on my '69 and '70, and they make a nice increase in power and performance. The are easy to install, easy to tune and maintain (once you've adjusted them, they don't need much other than checking the oil level in the dampers). SU's work fine on the street. I was just in NYC today with the '70 coupe and no problem in bumper to bumper traffic.

Webers, on the other hand, require a fair amount of work to tune and they are rather finicky in normal street driving situations. You won't really get the full benefits of Webers without changing the cams. I know there are some folks who love the Webers and will tell you they are great, but most of them are skilled mechanics who know how to work on them.

Bottom line, for street use, go with the SU's.
