I want to buy my husband the (Alpine) CD changer for his new (to him anyway) 1992 XJ6. The factory wiring is already present in the existing radio/tape player, (buttons have CD control labels as well as tape), according to the car's previous owner, and he told me that Alpine was the correct brand, but he couldn't tell me which Alpine would work.

Magnolia Hi-Fi told me to use the Alpine CHA-S634 but before I buy one online, I'd like some confirmation that this will work. I'd like this to be a surprise but I don't want to have to sneakily 'borrow' my husband's car to take it somewhere. The Jag dealership was no help at all. Does anyone know, or know how I can confirm this model number? Thanks, L.

Alpine is indeed the correct and original Jaguar item for this car. All the Jaguars were wired to accept the changers, and the Jaguar branded Alpine original unit is part number DBC 5130A.
But, any Alpine unit will work correctly, connect to the existing wiring, and will be controlled from the radio unit. The one I have used in a 1992 Jaguar is Alpine CHM-S630. Not alterations, no problems.

imho, there is no 'correct' stereo, you can install whatever brand or style you want provided you use the right chassis style, usually a DIN style chassis for modern cars. If only to get a second opinion, I would call Crutchfield Car Stereo since they have a huge database and installation kits for most cars, i.e., you can adapt any wiring to any stereo with the use of plug adapters. you can find Crutchfield toll free number by searching in google.com Alpine is not the only or the best car stereo brand, there are others. Clarion makes great car stereos too. I prefer Kenwood, that's what I use in my Jags. Their frequency response is superior (bass & treble response). Do some research, for example in a purchase like that, I would prefer if my woman asked me what I wanted exactly, instead of surprising me with a mistake that once installed, you cannot return.
