Your sig line first mentions "87 XJS" and then "87 XJ6". I assume we're really *are* talking about the XJS but, if the problem is with an 87 XJ6, nothing I said will make any sense at all.

Just checking..... :-)

Not sure if I totally understand the question. I guess we're talking about all the instruments.

Remove the cluster (just a few screws and it lifts out...be gentle...have the steering wheel extended fully outward and unplug the two connectors). You won't have much room for this but it's doable. Each connector, as I recall, has a little release tab.

Clean the connectors at the end of the harness and bend them outward slightly for a good contact on reassembly.

Inspect and clean all of the contact points on the flexible circuit board on the back of the cluster. This includes where the two connectors snap into place and each of the contact points under the little screws and nuts, and bulbs. Do them one at a time. Be gentle, the circuit tears easily.

Remove the long metal grounding bar from the cluster and clean the contct points. On reinstallation of the bar add a length of wire. oh...15 inches or so.....enough to dangle free and hook up to a known good ground point under the dash....a "redundant ground".

This oughta fix you up. In some cases a new printed circuit is required---only $60 or so. They are very delicate.

Hey, Mr Doug Dwyer, you are the electrical master, what is your best guess on this matter, Art, personally I have no idea........
