Hi, I just recently purchaced an 85 xj6 and I've noticed that the wipers seem to only have one speed snail speed. and the intermittant seems to work fine still as slow but it pauses.
whenever I stop the wipers they stop wherever I stop them this I'm guessing is a park switch problem. also the washer is not working.
Has anyone had this problem before and fixed it? I'm praying its not the selector switch on the column
thank you
Jeff

I had a similar problem with my 1984. I removed the selector switch from the steering column and then I dissected the switch assembly, (you'll have to drill the rivets off), I had nothing to loose. After I cleaned the contacts and re-bent them, (they go flat losing their 'detentes' or 'stops'), I put it back together with screws and it has worked fine since, that was years ago. To help the wiping speeds, inject transmission fluid through the shafts, (remove the wiper arms) adding one drop at a time as they run in slow speed. Don't saturate the shafts because the fluid might end up on the carpeting. Then you'll see an improvement in high speed. Overall, this is my biggest complaint about the Series 3 XJ-6, inadecuate wiper speeds that can't keep up in a heavy rainstorm! For a supercar like the XJ, this is absurd. Unbelievably, the two speeds in my 1965 S type are much faster in comparison to the XJ. And the frosting on the cake, the S type's wiper motor has an adjusting knob to fine-tune where the wipers park when you turn them off. They don't make 'em like they used to.

Always start by checking-cleaning-tightening all relevent connections...many of the fabled Lucas/Jag electrical problems are fixed this way.

After that, pray that it IS the selector switch on the column as it is the least expensive of te likely candidates (motor, switch, relay-timer). The park switch on the side of the motor is not a likely cnadidate in this case, IMHO
