My dreaded Bulb failure indicator came on over the weekend and, sure enough, the driver's side outside headlamp has burned out. I ordered the Haynes Manual #49011 (which I hope will not be as useless as the one for my 1977 XJ6L) but I need to be able to drive at night without getting a ticket. Short of disassembling the front end, how does one replace the headlamp?

I have searched extensively online with very little to show for my effort. These are round sealed beam lamps.

If you have the original 4 headlight USA system there is a bezel panel that surrounds the two lights on each side. It needs to be removed. To access it you need to remove one of the plastic chrome grill vane inserts which is held in by two small posi-drive (NOT Phillips & NOT Torx) screws pointing up, then with the bonnet opened there is an upper closing panel with two (2) posi-drive screws, this reveals the two (2) posi-drive screws holding the headlamp bezel on top. There is one posi-drive screw on the side revealed when you removed the grill vane. Loosen these three (3) posi-drive screws and the one at the bottom outside corner that is accessed from underneath the car using a long posi-drive screw driver. Then slide the bezel away. There are three screws holding the chrome ring securing the bulb. Note all 10 screws are posi-drive not phillips. Most people have trouble telling the difference and they mess up the heads making this 10 minute job into 2 hours.
My thanks to John who gave the above advice which I had edited slightly to exactly fit my experience.
