John,
Be careful here. I cant remeber but does you car have switchable dampers.

If it does then you can go down Carol's route but you will loose the switching capability of the system. If you want to maintain it then you have no choice but to fit OE Parts.

Secondly you have to be careful about the handling capabilities especially with an XJR. The XJ6 is much less powerfull and therefore more forgiving in terms of putting in more damper setting to stiffen the ride.

However if you do that you need to change both front and rear dampers at the same time other wise you will find that if you put stiffer dampers on the rear you will increase the amount of oversteer you get particularly in the wet. Similarly if you do the front you will increase the ammount of understeer.

The XJR has some pretty big roll bars and the damper settings take a lot of time to get right.

Personally id fit to OE dampers which are bilsteins in thier own right.

If you want to fit something to stiffen them up id always goes for an adjustable unit so i could play with the setting a bit to get the balance right but be warned these are not cheap.

I have not owned an XJR. My 1996 XJ6 (60K miles)is plenty car for me. Reliable, low maintenance and a nice sport sedan.
One other thought, be sure ask your tire dealer about Bilstein models just to be sure you get the correct model for your XJR.

Bilsteins work fine. Put Bilstiens (B36 1861 Front, B46 1858 rear) on my 1996 XJ6. Good for road travel and stiff enough for more aggressive driving. Koni supposedly gets good marks, but I have not used them.
