'95 XJ6 I have been told its a security system issue...I drive to the store, stop, I DON'T use the electronic key lock so the auto is unlocked, come back, key in ignition, turn it and all the dash lights come on but NOTHING HAPPENS. Sometimes it stays that way for 15-20 minutes. Today I had to call a cab after 45 minutes of trying to start it.

Can the ignition system be overridden so that this security lock down won't occur. The Jag dealer wants more $ to service it than the trade in value. Please ANYONE, HELP !!

It sounds like you have an issue with the gearshift interlock switch on the j gate shifter. If after you stop and you come back and there is no action at all ie the engine wont crank then im sure that is the issue.

There is a small microswitch that senses when the vehicle lever is in the p position. When the switch is closed it will allow the engine to be started. If the switch is open then it will not allow you to start the engine. Of course once you start the engine then you need to depress the brake before it will alow you to move from p to d. Its all part of the control strategy designed to satisfy the american market to avoid unintentional acceleration.

Over a period of time the cables that link the jgate to the gearbox lose thier setting and you find that the j gate alignment isnt quite a match for the gear selection. This is more noticeable down the left hand side of the gate 4'3'2 where there are no indentations / gates.

To try and overcome the problem hold the shift lever tight into the p gate and close the micro switch and try cranking again. Hopefully you will find she will spring into life.

If it is the switch then you can wait all day but she aint going to start. It has nothing to do with the door locking system and leaving your pride and joy not secure is not a good idea.

If it is this then you need to get the cables adjustment reset which is not a big job and your local dealer or mechanic can do it in 10 mins.

Ultimately you could have a faulty microswitch and this would need replacing but in 20 years at Jag i have never heard of a switch failing so id be looking at the cables first.

Best of luck and let me know how you get on.

I have had my 1996 XJ6 for 10 years now- Bought it from Jaguar when we launched the X300 and i have just done 100,000 miles without a hitch. Only thing i have had go wrong on my car is a small water pipe to the heater ruptured and dropped my coolant. 30 mins it was fixed and back on the road.

Fantastic car but due to jer age and mileage and im about to swap it for a 2001my XK8. Will still be sad to let here go.

I worked at jaguar for 20 years and i know what goes into these cars and believe me i wouldnt buy anything else.
