There is a 1970 ots series 2 with 2278 original miles on e-bay for sale and does not have a foam pad> Why would this car not have that for such low miles. Was this a factory item or just someone claiming they had them??????? Confused?

Dominic, Please don't use a 36 year old car for sale on ebay, regardless of the "claimed" mileage, as an example of what is or is not correct! I thought that George had pretty well covered this subject of when the foam pad was first used and for what years. The first mention of the pad was in the IPL for the 1968 model year car and the part number was BD.31996 Pad (Polyurethane) on top of radiator.

Dominic I forgot to add that any confusion as to the pads existance on S2 (and 1968) cars is eliminated when you look at the IPLs for these models.(parts manuals). George Camp

Dominic to answer this question and the other one the hard grey pads are incorrect. The reason the very low milage car has no pad is that it perished long ago. If you read the guide you will see a ref. that they were a service item. They were very soft (to seal well) and did not last long as it was to be replaced at service. The vendors who sell the hard grey pad got tired of people complaining that the pad was short lived so they made it out of more durable stuff that was also easier to work. The items were factory and the cars did have them. I doubt if it would shock you that owners and service techs. did not replace them (neglect). The first item I look for when a S2 is running warmer than normal is this seal.. Good luck. George Camp
