I have a 96 XJ6 that has a rattle that sounds like it is coming from the rear of the car. I had the gas tank removed, the rear deck removed, the rear seats removed and cannot find the source. I have had a mechanic spend about 12 hours looking and cannot find the problem. Anyone have a suggestion?

Had the same problem. Eventually replaced the shocks and bushings and it went away ASAP.
Your next issue will probably be the differential which tends to wear out for this model year XJ6. You will hear a high pitch singing sound (bearings) start which is the tell tale beginning.

I take it you were charged per hour to remove and replace all that stuff, right? have you tried to move the mufflers/pipes and as a consequence, the pipe brackets? (when the pipes are cold). Are there any sound/insulation shields/pads that might be loose? Perhaps if you could describe the sound better, comparing it to something else that's known? Sometimes a sound produced at the front reflects at the rear, and viceversa. Seek and you will find. Just don't get under the car without properly supporting it.
