After coming to this forum for information on what to look for in a used XJS (Thanks Doug!), I've been searching for that 'special' car that says 'take me home'. I think I've looked at every supposedly good-running coupe within a one-day driving distance. Now, admittedly I'm NOT looking at '92-up models (both for cost reasons due to my now-$5k budget, and I much prefer the styling of the earlier models), but the hunt has been disheartening. Nearly every car I've looked at certainly didn't meet MY definition of 'good running'(my Harley idles smoother than a few I looked at), all while the seller is telling me 'it just needs a little TLC'(is that Jag code for 'I'm tired of putting money in it?). I thought I had found one, an extremely clean '87, but after warming it up for a test drive, the water pump started spewing antifreeze. The seller said he was sure it was just a hose; yeah, right.
I'm not discouraged yet. I guess I forgot that the American Way (instant gratification) won't work with english cars. I did learn one valuable thing; I CAN'T buy a car with a sunroof. The trim moulding hits me right on the top of my head! There was a couple of cars that I didn't even look at because of that. Oh well, back into the brush.....

Its priced higher than your current budget, but you've seen what $5000 will buy
