good evening. i'm refinishing the interior and looking for replacement speakers. any good success stories out there for 2-way speakers that can be retrofit to the original case. I am using a radio w/ a tape deck to keep the original face in tact. The radio is larger than the original AM/FM unit and I'm playing with sizes. Any beefy 6.5 inch speaker is too deep w/ the magnet. I'm considering going down to a smaller speaker and going for just tweeters up front (BTW: it's a 2+2 and I have a removable box in the hatch as to not cut up any of the interior). I'm curious if anyone has had success w/ a good sound balance. Any thoughts are appreciated - thanks, Lonnie.

Lonnie----I bought a pair of 6.5 inch Kenwoods for about $200 that not only mount on the outside but also have a 1/2 inch spacer ring. I no longer have the box and the speakers have no identification, so I can't be more specific. They sound wonderful and fit fine in my S1 E-type. From the mountings in the store it may not be obvious that they can be mounted on the outside or that they come with a spacer ring. You also might be able to make your own spacer to be able to use the better speaker. good luck. 1967 E-type S1 FHC

Patrick, I have started down that road after a nice set of alpines just could not get jammed in there. I am retrofitting a 4" set and have made a mounting bracket. I have the original speakers and they are fine but I am looking for a broader range(2 way is what i'm putting in). The radio is merely for stop lights anyway as you point out : -) - thanks, Lonnie.

Lonnie: Yes, I agree. Replacement speakers that FIT are a big problem, and was one I struggled with for many months, if not years. You've got a few options. First, keep up with EPay and see if you can't snatch a beat up radio console that still has original speakers in them. Then, just get those speakers re-coned. The next option is to look at the speakers in vintage radios; you can find these radios in a non-working state and they are fairly cheap. The third option that will take the least amount of time is to just buy smaller modern-day speakers that will clear the framework/ashtray. You'll need to make a round sheetmetal adaptor ring spray painted flat black so that they mount on the original pegs in the radio console.

But between the wind and engine noise, you are not going to hear it anyway!!

Good Luck.
