I have been plagued with a transmission light that comes on for no yet identifiable reason. The dealer has tried everything including changing out the master computer to no avail. My only solution is to stop and turn off the ignition and restart the car. Has anyone had this problem and solved it? I could sure use some help!

I have a 94 XJ6 that has been giving the same problem. When the light is on the trans only operates in 3rd gear (limp home mode). I was doing the same as you but maybe I have found the gremlin. On the XJ6 firewall is a series of color coded sockets with Hella relays. On my car, the manual says that the violet (purple) socket is the transmission socket. I pulled the relay (they are all the same on my car) from the red socket and swapped it with the violet socket relay......no transmission light since!!!
I have also ordered 3 spare relays from Jagbits, just in case.

Good Luck,

Fred
