2003 xjr 1st time owner, just purchased last week. took her out today and now the brakes squeak. private owner insisted that everything ok and was just recently sent to the dealer for a 'check up'. Any help on why these brakes would, out of the blue, start to squeak aside from the obvious of replacing brakes. any help would be great- T

hi,

the rotors or "disks" might become "crystallized" if they have been through rain, then heated by braking hard, or by keeping your foot on the brake pedal, so they might need to be "turned clean" to remove the crystallized layer, and also perhaps, the pads might be crystallized too, or incorrect pads, or simply worn, but regardless, if you're going to service the rotors, you always install new pads. Many variables to pinpoint the reason they squeal, especially without knowing the history of the brakes.

Question: did the brakes squeal when you test-drove the car before you bought it? if no, then it was going to happen sooner or later, they need service and they are letting you know.

If you have any service records that the seller might have given you, check to see the last time the brakes were serviced, since there could still be a warranty.

If not, just start from scratch, get the correct Jaguar pads, I would suggest getting the pads from the Jaguar dealer this time until you become familiar with parts substitution. Don't cut corners with Brake parts or servicing. Once that is done, you should get long service.
