Lost brakes to the floor, now seem ok again. Obvious suspect is master cylinder. With a 1988 XJ-S what type of master is it? I do not have ABS, and I am curious if I have the Tevis system or not-- also, how to [proceed from here?

Thanks!

I use Castrol GT/LMA brake fluid. I've heard it's more compatible with the type of rubber used in Jag braking system seals. Might be urban legend for all I know

Thank you gentlemen for the responses. I do have the older style, NOT the tevis system. What type of Brake fluid should I buy (other than the Ford that was recommended), and I intend to flush out all the old fluid as well--any problems there? Would I use DOT 4 or DOT 5 replacement fluid?

Hi, the teeves is an anti lock sysyem which I think yoiu said you do not have.
Before installing the new mc you must bench bleed the unit first, usually there is a note in the box which prescribes / describes this operation, they may also give you a set of bleeder tubes which divert the air and air filled fluid back into the top of the mc before you hook up the brake lines. If you do not do this you may have a problem, once in place a good method of bleeding is with a vacum brake bleeder, start @ the furthest away bleed nipple and such the fluid through till there are no air bubbles and the fluid is the same colour as it came out of the can, clean and relatively clear.
BE CERTAIN TO BUY A HIGH BOILING POINT FLUID, THE HEAVY DUTY FORD FLUID IS VERY GOOD AND WILL NOT BREAK THE BANK, BUY STRAIGHT FROM THE FORD DEALER................IF YOU NEED MORE INFO LET ME KNOW....... ART

Not sure waht type of m/c it is but you'll seldom find one easier to replace. Its a very routine job. Might as well get a couple new cylinder-to-reservoir hoses while you're at it.
