How much horsepower?

Brian Long's book "Jaguar XJS" published by www.velocebooks.com gives the figure of 308 bhp (DIN)for the 1994 6.0L V12, up from the 280bhp of the 5.3L it replaced.

So much misinformation...tsk, tsk, tsk.

The 1994 6.0L V12 in the XJS is NOT rated at 308 hp. There are a lot of informative books out there, including Thorley's, but lots of times they neglect US vs European model differences, and year differences. The 1995 6.0L V12 in the XJS was rated higher than the 1994 V12. The 1994 model was indeed rated at 278 hp, not 308 hp.

When I have a free moment, I'll list the US hp ratings for all to see...I have them somewhere, having put a definitive list together several years ago (now just to find it).

True enough that there's more to a Jaguar than just horsepower, and, as a result, there's more than one way to enjoy Jaguar ownership, but performance has historically (although sadly not continuously) been part of the Jaguar image.

Go back to the Jaguar advertsing of years ago and you'll see that horsepower, top speed, LeMans victories, double over head camshafts, etc etc were much ballyhooed right along with style and luxury...oftentimes more so.

Some think that Jaguar would do well to re-associate itself with performance, speed, and horsepower... qualities that actually still exist in the marque but are so buried under luxury and "class" that they are all but invisible.

There was a time when schoolboys hoped that someday they might own a Jag. Nowadays few under 50 even knows what a Jaguar is much less want to own one.

And, I must say, dawdling along at 10 mph only supports the the notion that Jags are just another pretty face...all image, no substance.

A Jaguar's place is at the head of the pack, not putt-putting along on display ! The name is JAGUAR, not "Pretty Little Kitty" :-)

Go back nine years, when Jaguar sales were on fire....the automotive press raved about the supercharged V8 XJR and all its glorious horsepower (thank you, Ford, for that) and the public gobbled 'em up. For a while it was like the old days. Jaguar needs more of that, not less.

Well, all this flapping about the horsepower! How about the luxury ride, the acceleration at 80 mph and the feel of class in your hands when you cruise at 10 mph past all the gawkers. Who cares about the 5.3 seconds of blur. I love my car just the way it is, all 12 of those gas suckers and the turbine sound of the starter. Who ever buys Jaguar from Ford better learn from the American mistake and restore the English class to their new models.

I believe Jaguars are the common item here , although 500HP Chevy's really are the common thing in North America. Spoken as a Jag Lover not a commoner. Arto

Hey, I have a 7.0L V8 Chevy small block with 500 hp. I'm sure that's important.

my car is a 5.3, on the dyno it is about 300 crank hp, a few weeks ago on the JCNA Slalom course I competed against a couple of newer Corvettes, 350 HP and 400 HP, one guy was my road race driving instructor, I wa nervous for sure. I did however manage to beat their best time by 2.5 seconds, so it is not ALL about horses, its tyres , tenacity , knowledge, and becoming a one to one relationship with your car. Quad throttles , and a straight thru exhaust help my horse power

SAE hp is 0.986 x DIN hp (aka "PS")

DIN hp (PS) is still used in Europe for advertising, etc., but the rating system since around 1992 is the kilowatt.

So 278 DIN hp is about 274 SAE hp.

My XJRS is rated at 318 DIN hp and 313 SAE hp.

My model year update book (jag publication S-83) states that the power (DIN) of the 6.0 V12 is 278hp at 5400 rpm and torque is (DIN) 334 ft-lbs at 2800 rpm. Don't know if DIN measurements are different from SAE. Since this was published in 1993, the specs may have changed. Also, the power ratings often differ depending on where the car was sold (U.S., Europe, Japan, etc.).

Your '94 will have the 6.0 liter V12. The most common rating I've seen is 318 SAE net horsepower but depending on which brochure or spec sheet you are reading at the time you might see, if I recall correctly, 303, 308, or 313 bandied about. Or sumthin' like that :-)
