Hi Dwight,
I posted the same basic message on Jag Lover's, that site seems to have more persons contributing than JCNA Forum, however JCNA is coming along. The turning of the trim shaft is fairly stiff, however with a more manly pressure on the shaft it turned.
PS. you have two pretty nice cars in your posession,
Sincerely , Art

Hi Martin,

Just read your question regarding badge color. My 1990 XJ-S is a special edition that originally came with a gold badge (and special wheels, interior treatment, etc.). The original California owner changed it to a leaper after delivery.
As Doug stated so well above, you need to get delivery (as built) details in order to make your case.

Doug & Art,

Thank you very much for your research and input. The event has been over 30 days ago. No chance of getting my 1st place back. :)

I've been the 'New Kid on the block' and didn't think to question the judges about the color of the badge. Mainly because I think a black Jaguar should come with a black badge. It looks indeed much better.

Martin,

When an authenticity matter comes up during judging, it is up to the entrant (in this case, that's you!) to provide acceptable documentation to prove that the particular feature is authentic. Unfortunately, this does not include testimony from friends, previous owners, etc. See the rule book for what is acceptable.

My own 1995 XJS V12 Convertible has a black badge. Is it the original, factory installed? Highly likely, but I have no absolute proof of that, as I am the third owner. I looked in a 1995 Jaguar range brochure (which is considered acceptable documentation) and all the XJS pictured were wearing gold badges. Does this mean that every 1995 XJS came with a gold badge? Not necessarily, but it does prove that at least some of them did.

A friend who also has a 1995 XJS V12 Convertible recently ordered a replacement badge from the local Jaguar dealer, and the one he got was gold. Does this mean that all 1995 XJS came with a gold badge? Nope, but it means that is what is available from Jaguar now. Maybe they ran out of black badges... and you can be assured they won't be making any more.

My suspicion is that the badges were installed to be appropriate for the colour of the car. My car is black, and I think the black badge looks much better on it than a gold one would. I think a red car would look better with a gold badge.

Given that you are unlikely to come up with acceptable documentation to be certain a protest would be successful, I'd suggest you file the protest, and state that the badge colour issue is unresolved, and that you should not be penalized due to the uncertainty. Suggest that whoever eventually takes on producing a facelift XJS Judging Guide (no one has stepped forward yet) investigate the badge colour issue.

A couple of other things: on the day of the event, did you request that the Chief Judge be consulted regarding this? If you didn't, you should have, as that very often provides an immediate resolution. Secondly, as an experienced judge who is known for being "tough" on authenticity issues, I would never take a deduction unless I was very sure that I was right. I can't believe that your judges had any such certainty (how could anyone?). I suggest an approach of "if in doubt, favour the entrant".

Good luck,

Doug Ingram

Hi Guy's,
both my coupe and the con. have black hood badges. I am sure however that later models did come with the Gold badging. I am pretty sure my friends later V12 con. has gold on there, he is not home right now in Seattle. When I hear back from him I shall let you know. You have I believe 30 days to make a protest and try and get the points returned, they are a straight bunch of guy's on the protest committee, I have dealt with them in the past and had points returned .
Good news my friend just called me back, he states his car does in fact does have GOLD BADGING. His car is a 90 Celebration Convertible,. Randy Prine is the protest chair, you need to contact him,
Gold luck, Art

Dwight,

I own a 1995 XJS convertible and got points deducted because the judges said the car did not come with a 'gold' badge but rather a black one. Any input?

Thanks,

Thanks Art - a picture of my two Jags. I pulled the leaper off the XJ-S in favor of the original gold bonnet badge.

Hi Art,

Good to know. So how did you figure this out; trial and error or did you have a reference source?

Just in case there are others out there that would like this info, turn to Left makes it go Lean, turn to Right makes it go Rich. I wished to know this as my vacum was low due to hi lift cams, and this confused the ecu into thinking possibly the engine required more gas to get it started.....
I cranked the trim full left and the idle has become way better, I also advanced the ignition timing and now the engine responds better.
Back to the big track October 6th for final 2007 testing........

Hi Guy's and Girls,
does anyone know which way to rotate the trim control to compensate for less vacum, and hopefully put less fuel in the cylinders especially at idle,
Regards, Art
