I've read a bit on this but not found any good detail on how to reprogram the XJS alarm system for "new" remotes. One of my remotes is no longer accepted by the alarm system. This is a little scary as I can easily get stranded if the one that works fails (as nearly happened canoing in Zilker a few weeks ago)

The stuff I've read indicates:
1) The process is identical to the XJ6 *except*...
2) There's no switch in the glove box. The wiring harness hear the shifter has a free two prong plug to which the switch should be connected and in order to program the alarm system you need to connect a switch to this plug and follow the procedure for the XJS.

The owners manual says you have to take it to the shop. The local dealer gives me a stupid look and says something akin to: "Huh. Really? I don't think we do that."

Any stories, ideas or knowledge before I destroy my alarm system and create even bigger headaches?

From my understanding, they omitted the switch, at least from 94 on, maybe all facelift cars. As far as being prolific on jag-lovers, that comes from trying to learn all I can about my cars, and starting off as a complete (new guy) as far as Jaguars are concerned. These forumns are a great source of info, and keeps us out of the hands of shops. Don't want anyone touching my cars if possible.

Thanks Keith! You're prolific on jag-lovers.

Here's a link to the procedure (for archive sake)
http://www.jagbits.com/reprogram.html

It's an XJ6 procedure which is the same for the XJS except the XJS does not have a switch in the glove box. It seems like they meant to put it in but didn't for some reason. The connector for the switch is on cabling in the center console next to the shifter. On my car it's the only disconnected 2 pin connector.

As keith notes you can just use a couple of paper clips and short the leads or you can install a momentary on switch. I couldn't find the specific molex connector so I used 18ga solid copper wire, zip ties for strain relief and some tape in part so I could leave the wiring harness intact and just installed the switch in the tiny little glove box.

I don't know the wiring colors off hand and can't find that reference again. On my car the 2 pin connector was obvious as the only disconnected portion of the wiring harness in the center console. It doesn't seem to be in the wiring diagrams I've got from Jaguar either. Maybe I'm looking for the wrong thing, it's hard to tell.

Jim, been meaning to post here in response to your question about remote programming, but been extremely busy. We covered this at length on Jag-Lovers.org. Too much to repeat, but, if you'll go to that website, go to the XJS forumns, and at the bottom of the forumn page enter into the search box my name (Keith Hodges). The search will bring up all my posts on Jag Lovers. Go to page 15, and once there look for the title, Programming remotes, or something similar. I believe you'll find what you need. The part about the switch will work, but you can also just short out the plug with both ends of a paperclip. Personally, I have not done this proceedure yet, been procrastanating, but several people that contacted me said they followed the directions and it worked. The directions came from a remote that I bought on ebay, prior to finding an original Jaguar remote. Hope this helps. Keith.
