Why is the 90 XJ-S eating batteries for snacks .... every other year the battery is swelled, deformed and rendered useless ...

A 1990 XJS wiil/should have a Bosch alternator. Nothing particularly special about it. You should be able to source one easily at a reasonable price.

I am wondering (an a bit embarassed to admit) if the alternator is a GM part (like the AC compressor, air pump, and transmission, etc.) ? If so, Art is right - it should be comparitively cheap.

Hi Dan,
most these newer alternators have internal regulators, simply take it off and take it to any of the local auto stores most of whom have free testing, alternators are reasonably cheap also.
Bye for now, Art

I agree .... any idea where from? Or I am going to overcharged to have a mechanic map it out?
