Hi,

My car has been running fine. No signs of trouble but then today after a few errands, which required turning the car on and off many times, it turned on but idled and shook like it was running on 3 cylinders. If I did not touch the accelerator pedal the car would move on it's own power. The instant I touched the accelerator it did nothing - like vacuuming out, no rev sound no forward motion, when I took my foot off it went back to moving on it's own power. I tried turning the car on numerous times within 30 minutes and it kept doing the same thing.

I let the car sit for about four hours in a parking lot and when I went back to see if it would start it took about six tries of seeming like no fuel getting to the engine and then it came on but in limp home mode (Check engine light on and transmission light on) it drove as if nothing was wrong all the way home (5 miles ) and idled fine.

Anyone experience anything like that and any idea what it might be or what to look for?

Thank you.

Two suggestions; First, if it hasn't been done recently, change the fuel filter. Second,I would suggest going to an independent who has a scanning system such as Autologic. It will be cheaper and faster!

Ed,

You need to get your computer reprogrammed by a service dealer.
I had the same thing happen, and have not had the issue since they re-uploaded the software.
The "claim" was that any static electricity issue could have destroyde the stored data.

Good luck,

Edward, it does sound like the fuel pump may be going. My '91 XJ-6 was doing the same thing until I checked the fuel pressure and found it too low so I ordered a new in-line fuel pump, installed it and now she runs like new. The "limp-home" is a safety factor built into the tranny ECM to protect it when other situations arise. Also, you need to consider that my '91 is a Jaguar and your '95 is a glorified Ford Taurus. (Sorry about that Ford, but I have NEVER been a Ford fan.)
