This appears to connect with the Starter relay on the firewall (positive connectivity), but I don't know where this end goes. Any help is appreciated.

David and friends,

YAHOO! Suddenly, all my pictures changed to full scale (so they can be seen clearly). I had complained to the Webmaster via e-mail and if he made this happen.... many thanks!

Here's a comparable pic of my solenoid/starter. There's no power connection to the back of the starter. Your pic indicates it "might" connect around there before it moves on to the solenoid) Rather, it seems the power is connected do the top of the solenoid and the wire leading back to the starter rely seems like it should be attached to the nut below the power nut (????)

For some reason, the power from the battery is connected to a short, similar sized cable (see pic directly above this note), as if the power cable should attach somewhere and then move on via the shorter cable to the solenoid. My wiring diagram doesn't show any break in the power connection though.

Why, when I upload a 4 MB+ picture (like this one above), it gets posted and 9KB? It's really useless when you want to show someone specific details. I'm within the 5MB limits.

No, the solonoid is on top of the starter and the mystery wire should fit on the nut opposite where the battery is connected to the solonoid (I hope!) Another pic! Thanks to all!

You hit the nail on the head. My "clean it up" project ended up looking like this pic in mid-February. Virtually everything under the bonnet either renewed (only 37,000 miles) or new since then. I made pretty meticulous photos of almost everything, but am struggling with the electrical stuff, since many of the cloth wires have lost their color. So it's Joe-Novice and an Ohm meter trying to figure things out.
What confused me about this one issue is that looking at the starter, there's the main power wire from the battery and another small wire attaching to a screw back near the engine wall. Since my wiring diagram only shows one black going in, and a WR leading to C2 on the started relay (which this big wire does), I figured I had too many wires attached to the starter/solonoid if I put this end where the diagram show a wire should go.
So, this goes to the post (at the bottom of the solonoid in my pic), where it feeds into the top of the starter?
