Does anyone have any more info on VIN # 885870 (it was a Black,
LHD, SI, Coupe)?

Well I am back and the more I read, the more glad I am to have passed on the "Toronto Car". I did not make a note of the engine and chasis numbers which would have helped - they were visble. The Toronto Car was being sold as a "numbers matching" car. I had no issues with the seller as he was not candy-coating what he had and he presented as an upfront guy. I suspected collision issues where the body did not line up around door area on passenger-side. The hood was presented as a "replacement". There was plenty of bondo mixed with deep rust throughout the body. The (monocoque) framing around the engine and the firewall appeared true. The original black paint was missing and replaced with a faded, blue. The interior was also a poor replacement, plasticky seats etc. (Worst I have seen including carpeting suitable for a cat scratching post). The dash and the steering wheel were authentic. Only paperwork was the bill of sale and the government registration. There was no tool kit, owners' manual, orig. warranty, any receipts etc. We are not afraid of rust (see attached) but we do fear a poor bondo job for what's being hidden thereby.

Reading these was interesting in as much as what happened this week. I was asked if I could do an inspection of a 69 Roadster the caller had purchased on E bay which apparently, had started life as a 2*2. In 45 years in the jag trade I have never seen such a bad car, A relatively good paint job, rechromed bumpers and a new soft top made the car look reasonable from a distance, and in a photo, other than that it was a death trap literally, the frame being held together by two 2 X 3 steel tubes welded directly to whatever they could find. Huge rust holes had already appeared through the new paint and could see the ground through the front and rear floors. i did not get the car to run. The chassis No was close to IS 47xxx. How anyone could buy a car like this sight ubseen seems amazing but they were lured by the description, fortunately they are covered by the e mail guarantee. Dan,I think/hope that Dennis answered the wrong post!

Dan,

I went up to see a very early black/red 3.8 FHC north of Toronto about 15 years ago. It was a severely accidented car and all the parts from the wrecked shell were being transplanted onto another shell which was going to assume the identity of the accidented shell. Could this be one of those two shells?

" ... I try to get out but [this thread] keeps pulling me back"

Hi Bob -
Michigan has a GREAT concours ... Top drawer in hospitality and class ... It's real thrill to
place in the Michigan show and bask in the good sportmanship.
The birth of my daughter in 2007 messed up my Jaguar schedulings of 2007/8 but I would
really like to come back in D-08B (with the "usual suspect") or (with luck) in C-19 (with an
XKE) in 2009 ... The maligned TORONTO XKE coupe discussed hereat would have made you weep ... Suffice to day, no plans visit to Wisconsin anytime soon.

Gee Dan you miss a couple of Michigan Concours and now you've got people on your case for nothing what so ever! Must be a moral here somewhere!

I am the secretary of the Ontario Jaguar Onwers Assocation in Toronto, Ontario. I like to look at Jags that are for sale.

This is what has transpired:

1. I responded to a local newspaper advert (classified) selling a purported 1962 XKE;
2. On inspection, I viewed a 1962 Coupe completete but it was a poor specimen
located in TORONTO, ONTARIO, CANADA;
3. I was shown veh registration papers with a VIN number and made a note of the VIN
number;
4. VIN plate was missing from the car which was/is unusual;
5. I decided not to pursue the car further despite a very reasonable price due to
(a) the condition; (b) lack of a VIN plate and (c) my own storage/restoration issues
with other cars.
6. I then casually asked on this Forum about the VIN wanting the potential vehicle's history, if known, and I was then promptly flamed by you for asking.

I will now drop this thread without further comment as this thread is unduly.... hmm ... snarky.

This car is a 1962 (and not a late 1961). Saw it recently in bad shape and wondered if anybody knew in its better days.

Hi D.Lokum,

A friend of mine owned a 1967 FHC. Black exterior and red interior. Unfortunately I don't have the serial number. Do you know where your car came from? The car my friend owned spent many, many years in Daytona Beach, Florida.

Good luck on your search.
Bill.
