I'm interested in putting an original-style radio in my 66 e-type
would appreciate any insight into the make/model and a source.
also any visual reference.

I personally prefer the Blaupunkt "Frankfurt" model. Actually, any radio from your time period will be okay, such as Motorola; perhaps British Leyland.
The Blaupunkts look great, however, they use a second power remote unit. On an E-Type this power unit will have to be mounted behind the glove box cubby hole...kinda a pain.
I seem to recall a US version that doesn't have this second power module. Check EBay. There are guys to restore these things all the time. Expect $350 or so for this radio.
Do a Google image search (or Yahoo) for Blaupunkt frankfurt and you'll see some examples. The knobs should be black and the face plate kind of trapezoid in shape. Blaupunkt also made a "Manhattan" model that has all chrome push buttons....very nice; top of the line.
