Hi guys, Any thoughts would be welcome to help fix the follwing issue: I've recently noticed black liquid (assuming oil) spraying out of both exhaust pipes when the car is running. Noticed the spots on the garage floor while I was warming the car up the other day.
Any ideas? What might cause this? Is this something I might be able to fix on my own?
thanks for any thoughts,
Joe

I'm not sure of any reputable mecahincs in my area. Maybe I'll send out a post in the General area looking for reccommndations for reliable and trustworthy mechanics.
By the way , I did noticce the spray in the exhaust only happens with the choke open (while I'm warming up the car). After it's been going for a while the spray stops and the car seems to idle correctly. Seems like most of my issues come to light during the first ten minutes while I'm warrming up the car.

Any sugggestion for a reputabel mechanic or JCNA Member (who konws the XJ6 well enough) in the Yardley PA or Trenton area -I live about 35 miles north on Rt. 95 from Philadelphia.?

thanks for your suggestions adn advice.

Joe--uh it could be the float--on both tanks? It could be a fuse but other things would not work--or it could be the switch over. Have you gotten a second opinion? There are a lot of well meaning mechanics out there that just do not have the working knowledge.

Thanks as always George. The spray does in fact occur with the choke wide open while I'm warming the engine up in the garage (although I haven;t checked it out once it's warmed up). I'll try that over the next day or so.

Re the milage, I'll also have to get back to you on that - my gas gage doesn't work so it's tough or me to tell how much gas I have in the tank. The guy i bought it from said it was just a fuse while the JAg mecanic I take it to said I need to fix the gs line and some kind of "float" in the gas tank (another couple hundred dollars for sure!). Buying this car is turning out to be a major regret - I paid $3900 for it and added another $2300 (in labor and parts) and still can;t get it to run correctly while new problems keep croppoing up.

Joe depending on the accuracy of your description it sounds like a nornal result of cold weather and a car with carbs and the choke on. Perhaps you are too rich but condensation (a lot when cold) and carbon from rich running causes a mess. It should not however "spray" out in any great quantity. You were going to tell us your fuel milage also--
