I have a 1991 XJS which suffered an engine fire before I bought it. I have replaced most of the wires, hoses, injectors etc that were affected. The car is running, but it idles at about 1800 rpm.
I need the source for a good shop manual or other repair manual for 1988-1991 XJS cars. I also have a 1988 which has been sitting for a few years.
The 91 has a burned rotor button which has only one good arm. The rotor has melted and is obviously part of the problem. I picked up a new one today and hope to get back on the project this weekend.
Can anyone offer some direction in finding a good source for a shop manual or for other repair manuals such as Haynes or Chilton? The car has only 57K original miles and the exterior and interior are in excellent condition. It's a very promising project and with your help I hope to have it performing correctly very soon.
Thanks in advance for any direction. Hugo in Georgia

1991 XJS running poorly and idles too high
Hugh you can get the factory manuals here--go to the JCNA shoppe---both parts and service are available and the price is very good. A cd if only good if you want to take your laptop to the car and get it dirty (or drop it a few times). A hard copy manual works well for actual work! Support JCNA by using the forum and using the services provided. Thanks

You can get a CD of the factory repair manual from any of the suppliers or on eBay.
As far as the fast idle, there are two common causes. One is the AAV sticking. This is on the left bank, at the rear of the engine. There is a 1/2" or 13 mm nut that adjust air flow. If you open the left air cleaner, ou will see where the air goes to the valve. Block it and see if the idle drops.
The other possibility is a vacuum leak. If there was an engine fire, one or more of the vacuum lines may have developed a leak. You can try spraying carb cleaner at all the hoses and see if there is a change in idle.
