I have a 1988 XJS. When I turn on the heater/AC fan, I hear a whinning sound coming from the passenger side, either from the console vent area or the vent to the right of the glove box. It is a high pitched sound and could be the sound of a fan rubbing against something. Are there fans located in each of those areas and how do I get to them? Any thoughts on other causes of this annoying sound?

Hi John,
the blower motors on these cars are really difficult to remove / replace. as one of my Jag mechanic friends said, not difficult if you enjoy standing on your head for a couple of hours.... It is a rotten job for sure.If it is a hi pitched sound I would suspect a dry bearing. the wiring on these motors is also rather complex. If it is just one of the motore, perhaps you could just unplug the electrical connection, or pull the fuse for that side and just let the other one do all the work.. Good Luck. Art

There is a blower fan in each footwell, up against the firewall...buried. Removing them is not a whistle-while-you-work proposition.

It's been years since I did the job so I can't give you a step-by-step but basically you remove (or move aside) everything in front of them (the electrical panles and fuse boxes, most notably) and them you'll be able to actually see what you are doing. I think I used lots of 1/4" drive sockets, extensions, and flex joints.

Hopefully others will chime in with a better description.

Good luck
