The joint between the suspension/engine mount verticle box and the bottom frame has all but come apart so after much soul searching, breast-beating and lots of free advice I have finally decided to replace the entire front frame set on my 70 E-Type. Right, left, bonnet and picture frames as supplied complete with hardware etc from Etypefabs.com in England. Hopefully I might be able to sell the undamaged parts on E-Bay to offset some of the cost, which is slightly discounted as a set. Delivery is a month or so, leaving me plenty of time to decide whether to attempt this project with the engine in place or out. If I remove the engine then there are all those other suggestions, like rebuild the clutch (I know Patrick, a must), how about a five speed? lets replace and upgrade the rear seal while you're at it, a good time to rebuild the engine, etc. etc. etc. Maybe I'd get to drive it again in 2012. Stay tuned

Thanks guys. Probably won't be able to afford a 5 speed after all the other work. I'll be poor - like Patrick! One of our JDCNT E-Type guys is getting a 5 speed from Florida so it may be a Medatronics. I'll be able to check it out, just in case. No question, if I get one it will be from the US and not an import.

Alan,
If you are serious about a 5 speed, you should talk, or go on line to, Paul Cangliosi at Medatronics in Tequesta Fl. He makes the JT5 trans. and I highly recommend it. I put one in my 1961 OTS 18 months ago and it is terrific.

My car has a 4.2 engine that was mated with a synchro 4 speed. This change not only cuts way down on revs , wear and engine strain at speed on the highway, I use the 5th gear even around town quite a bit. I think Paul supplies to XK's unlimited.

Very satisfied buyer of a very high quality transmission. Howard Bollinger

Alan, I think you are making the right decision. Wait for the new units to come in before selling the old. You want to make sure they match each other in length, and match the old you are replacing.

%-speeds have been discussed on this forum before, and what I've learned from those that have done it, it's not worth the added costs. But then again, if you are converting from an auto-tranny to a 5-speed, then that might make for a more fun car to drive.....but boy, just think of the things you have to change!

I know nothing about E-Type Fabs or thier products. I'd be inclined to buy the 5-speed from XK's. At least you are dealing with a US company as opposed to one over the pond.I thin the one X-K's offers is tried and true.
