While looking at my 1988 XJS last week I was trying to figure out why the passenger side window wasn't working. One thread I read said to check the relay for the window. I dropped the cover from under the passenger side of dash and couldn't figure out which one of two relays was the one to check. So, I wiggled a bunch of connectors and now I have an additional problem: the trun signals and brake lights are not working!! Anyone know what I may have done to cause this?? And, still looking at how to get that passenger side window working again!!

Thanks!

traced turn signals and brake lights to a common fuse under the drivers side dash. I replaced the fuse, the turn signals worked again, but after hitting the brakes the fuse blew and neither the brakes nor the turn signals are working.

As for window, it started working and then quit again. I think i need to remove the switch and then clean it and see what happens.

Rod, are you SURE the problem with the lights happened after fussing with the relays? If so, simpy go back to that neck of the woods and do some more jiggling and look for any suspect connections. However....Not that I have a photographic memory but I don't think there is any exterior lighting stuff in that neck of the woods.

Abyhow, as George says, make sure the fuses are OK and the fuse terminals are not corroded. Also, exercise the emergency flasher switch smartly 20 times and see if the signals come back to life. Power for the signals comes from the emregency flasher switch,

For the windows I'd check/clean the window switch....known problem area. Remove the switch and spray some contact cleaner inside. Sometimes you can disassemble the switch for a really good cleaning.

If the relay was bad both windows would be inop, not just one

Post back if more help needed.

Do you have a 12v test light or meter ?

Cheers

Rod does that mean you have the car running on 12? As far as your electrical issues try cleaning all of the fuses --one at a time. Surely you did not tug hard enough to unplug the harness.
