I am trying to bring in a parts car for a restoration project. It is a non running xj, for parts only. It will have to shipped from Britain to the US, possibly in a container. Does anyone have any experience with shipping? I'm afraid the cost will be prohibitive.

shipping car from overseas?
Does sound a bit absurd. There are many xj's available in the states for parts. I am more interested in converting my US spec to euro bumpers and headlamps, among other things. I also need a complete interior. This car has what I need, but is non running. The cost of replacing parts in the US will add up. If I could find a suitable car here, I would go after it. Peter, I may be able to have the seller break the car up for parts. My car is a late 1977 XJ6C. Finding a decent parts car is a bit of a quest.

That would be my guess too. Definitely not worth the cost (on the face of it) for a non-running spares car. It only makes sense in comparison to the cumulative cost of getting parts shipped but unless you want almost everything as a spare, even then it doesn't make a lot of sense. compared to buying locally, even if the car was free. Plus there would be paperwork and customs and collection from the port of entry etc.
I will hopefully be shipping a container with my own cars and spares next year so if there were specific XJ spares you wanted and the car was vaguely local it might be possible to piggy-back my shipment in due course once I find out in hopefully the next week or two?

Why John, what model is it? It would seem that there are much better (rust free,LHD) cars available in the US. Shipping for a car that is not drivable is likely to be in the region of $2000!
Well I inherited a 1986 XJ6--- along with other Jags. This car runs, is in pretty good shape expect for upholstery & is located in southern California. Body is very good & as far as I know complete vehicle but of course assume to US specs. The IRS alone is valuable from these cars. I would part with this for less than shipping unit from UK if at all helpful
