I believe that our beloved wire wheels may be made tubeless by treatment around the spokes with a latex/resin compound. I am running the traditional 16 inch rims, and would like to go tubelss. Has anyone tried tubeless tires on 16 inch rims, and would you know of the product to use? PS my wheels are relatively (7Yrs) new Daytonn chrome with stainless wires.

Gary,

You should probably contact the Dayton factory to learn if they even recommend this, or if they can make the conversion to tubeless for you. There's too much riding on your wheels and tires (pun intended!) to take the risk of a DIY conversion.

Beware when using any kind of sealer in place of tube. The spokes carry the full weight and reaction forces of the wheel, therefore they move albeit slightly. This movement might break the sealant whereas a tube has some flexibility. As regards the fitting of wires to a Mk X, it is only a matter of replacing the hubs.

My dad had a XK150S some time ago (when I was a wee little kid) but I never heard if he ever went tubeless on his 16" rims. It would be interesting because I'd like to find out if the same process can be carried over to the later spoke rims. Would save the hassel of searching for tubes. Coincidentally, I would like to convert my Mark X from steel wheel/5lug hub to spoke wheel/splined hub, original Jaguar of course. I've seen pics of a Mark X that had the 5lug spoke conversion but somehow it loses the appeal that it was originally intended to draw as the splined hub with real knock-off spinners.
