Thanks to everyone here, the XK Club magazine archives (http://www.xkclub.com/index.htm) and members of the JagLovers list for all the help on this problem.
I have now accumulated a lot of info in a very short period of time. If anyone wants a document I have created with all the comments not on this list, let me know off list and I will send it to you.
Here is what I am going to do:
1. Check the thermostat
2. Check the water pump
3. Desludge engine
4. Recore the radiator
5. Add overflow tank
6. Add electric fan
7. Try to stay out of traffic in the summer!

David,
I just came across your (2002) overheating discussion thread, and don't know if you are currently still trying to solve this problem.
I had identical problems with my 140, tried all the remedies you listed on the last summary posting, and found my car's overheating was caused solely by being badly mis-timed!
If you haven't had someone competent to check the timing, try it. These engines will produce a hage amount of extra heat if the timing is off, or if the vacuum advance isn't working properly.
