I am having a problem with my car not starting and not being able to move the gear shift level. The car acts as if the battery is dead but it is not. Even when placing the key in the on position, I can't move the gear shift selector. Someone has suggested the ignition switch or the alarm has malfunctioned. Any similar situations? My car is a 1997.

It is more likely that the alarm system has malfunctioned. You will have to take the car to a mechanic who can access the On Board computer. You do not say where you are but the link below may help, it is a classic car rental site but they do computer scans on most vehicles. Jaguar affectionado and etc.

sometimes Jags steering wheels appear jammed or whatever , usually the steering wheel needs to be rocked side to side to allow the key to be turned on and gear selected, good luck,
