I have an XK gearbox that I rescued and am trying to determine just what year and model. Does anyone know of a comprehensive list of trans numbers? The number on the case top is L14334. It appearas to have been rebuilt and never installed. The gears appear brand new with no marks of any kind on them. I saved this from going to the dumpster and would like to know just what it is. Any help would be appreciated. Picture attached

Ok, maybe I can put this to rest now. Found a site through Jag-Lovers that list all the gearbox numbers, modifications and dates of manufacture. Going by the number on the case. this one seems to be a 120 non-overdrive box made after a stop-pin mod(Dec. '52) but before they strengthened the forks(Feb. '53). The mounting flange on the bottom rear says it was a 120 and not a MK VII. This seems to be pretty strong evidence for it being a 120 box. Thanks to all for their help.

Sorry guys, I got that just bassackward. Went out to the barn and checked out a known XK140 CR box - it has the broad flat flange. The known XK120 gearbox right next to it has none. So, I must concur with the XK140 ID.

The mystery continues. The story behind this a friend of bought a 120 cpe and got all these parts with it. He was going to throw them out but I could see that so I took them. It was a whole truck load of parts. both 120 and 140. Previous owner had both at one time and I have now idea which car this was for. Another friend has a '54 120 with the same case top. Does the number not relate to year at all or is it irrelavent at this point? I don't know. All I know is it won't fit either of my sedans.

OK men, I have had the trans out of my XK120 FHC recently and it had the same broad rear mount as the tran in your picture. I've also had occasion to have the trans out of my XK140 DHC OD fitted car and it had no provision for a rear mount at all, other than the rubber cradle device bolted to the top of the crossmember. So, my $.02 worth is that the trans is XK 120, circa 1952.

Jim,
This may help, it appears to be for an XK 140 non-overdrive although year and body style remain a mystery to me. Good Luck
