After 30 years of admiring Jaguars from a distance, I did my research (I thought)and bought my "toy"; a 1995 XJS 4.0 liter coupe. There is a local shop that specializes in European autos and I met with the owner and shop foreman. I have a good feeling about them and the shop. My question: During the initial inspection of the XJS, the verdict came back as a "nice car" but they made recomendations of things that should be done. One item was replacement of the transmission cooler hoses. I agree that they need replacement. Price of the hoses is in line with prices quoted on a variety of web sites but the labor quoted was $570. I am going to keep the car, so do I need to get used to this sort of thing? I live in the central valley of California (Bakersfield). Where are the good service stations? Any help is appreciated. Thanks RD

I think they were being "overcarefull" these hoses often seep but rarely burst. Unless they really are damaged I would not replace them! Jaguar affectionado and etc.
There is a nice little Jaguar club in Visalia just up the road, and I think they have some members from the Bakersfield area. Best thing to do is to join that club, and maybe someone there can help you out with mechanic recommendations for the south valley. Bakersfield is not known as a big Jag town, so I think you will probably be dealing with overpriced labor, or it will be hard to find someone to work on that car. Hopefully the folks in Visalia can help.
