This seems to be a hot topic. First its amazing how many people who own a Jag know nothing of how the car works. It leaves them in a bad spot as time goes by because less and less people know how to repair them.
1. If your wiring is original and complete it will work.
2. If your wiring is butchered , it wont work.
3. If you don't know what your doing, it wont help.
The Lucas alt was WEAK to begin with, now over 45 years old, I think its fair to say it might be wearing out?
The easiest and LEAST expensive for the is frugal crowd is to replace it with a GM/MINI 1 WIRE ALT.
Just one wire from the alt to the positive post and you eliminate 13 wires, relay, 3way relays and tiny dummy lights on the dash. Remember you have a gauge telling you if your charging.
Enjoy my friends, 29 years and 6,ooo miles per year, never a break down....
