I have a 1988 XJS. There is a hose by the brake cylinder that has a small filter attached, but it doesn't connect to anything. I can't find any picture of an engine that has this hose. Does anyone know what it should connect to?

All I can figure is that it might have gone to the cruise control, which either has been removed from my Jag or just doesn't work.

Jags are full of clever and interesting devices not often seen on other cars. What you are describing is the distributor vent system.

The filter is on the intake side of the vent system and the hose should attach to a nipple on the top of the distributor cap.

On the side of the distributor cap is another nipple with a vacuum hose going to a vacuum source--- in this case the hose from the Aux Air valve.

When the engine is running the vacuum pulls fresh, filtered air thru the cap so as to remove crankcase vapors which may have migrated up thru the distributor.

Some might say that Jaguar should've improved on sealing so as to obviate the need for venting :-)
