I just purchased my 1969 XKE roadster and am wondering if I could/should run Mobile One oil and filter in my Jag? I would appreciate any thoughts. This car has used Castrol oil in the past 10 years from the previous owner. It has 70k original miles and the engine was rebuilt about 7k miles ago.

I had a Porsche mechanic that swore by Amsoil. In fact he would sell Porsche engines that he had rebuilt and offer a 50,000 mile warranty as long as the person who bought it used Amsoil. I have not put it in my E-type yet becuase I heard there is some sort of engine flush procedure that should be done first if your engine has been running on not synthetic.

Scott,

Not to pick nits, but I was just looking at Mobil's web site and their article on this year being the 30th anniversary of Mobil 1. Let's see, 2004 minus 30 = 1974? Did your father let the car sit idle for thefirst 7 years?

All in good fun!

Peter,

IMHO, Castrol GTX 20W50 is just fine. I've used it in an XJS, Ser. II and Ser. III E-types and a Ferrari with great success. I change the oil every fall before winter lay-up, and then again in the spring after I've had the car out and running for a while. Personally, I'd rather keep fresh oil in the car than worry about using synthetics.

If you don't already have one, get yourself a spin-on oil filter adapter, like the one available from www.coolcatcorp.com (NAYYY, just a happy customer). Also, checkout the oil drain plug quick change adapter. It will avoid the risk of stripping the threads on the aluminum oil pan. Together, they make doing an oil change a piece of cake.

I've been using Mobil-1 0W40 in my '69 E-Type. I change oil every 2000, and I've sent samples for oil analysis. The wear pattern is normal, and the oil holds up. Main advantage of synthetics is that oil pressure build VERY fast when you first start up. Don't do this if you are thinking to get 20,000 miles between oil changes...extended change intervals are too risky.

Mobil doesn't make a filter for the E-Type, unless someone has converted your car to spin-on filters.

Peter,
My father owned or XKE since 1968 and has only ever used Mobil 1 all its life. 10w 50 is ideal wieght for general purpose, but if you are racing or going to drive your "E" really hard might want to increse the wieght. Good luck once again!
