I have a recently purchased E-type. A previous owner greased the splines, and I can't remove the rear wheels. I've tried a hydraulic pulling rig laced to the spokes, tried (modest) heat, WD 40, even removed the nut and tried pulling the wheel and hub off the half shafttogether. What's the trick?

Re.: stuck wire wheels
First there should be some lubricant on the wheels. Coppa slip has worked well since splined wheels were introduced. Since you do not seem to think they are rusty (grease statement) then my guess would you have a spoke nipple broken off and is forming a wedge. Since you have probably ruined the wheel with a puller you have two choices-1. cut the wheel off or 2. remove the half shaft from the car with the wheel and have it pressed off. I have had to do that a couple of times over the years when they were bonded. If you are sure it is not bonded try going in and out and look inside between the wheel and hub for a spoke tip. Good luck.

Thanks George. They COULD be rusted, but the fronts were full of really thick grease, as were all the knock-offs. Doesn't look like there is a spoke tip loose, I can see right in to the start of the splines all around. I'm pretty sure I haven't damaged the wheels because I've used 1/4" rope around eight different pairs of spokes right at the hub. If the splines are rusted, are there any further things to try in situ? It will certainly be a sight if I have to take the wheel, hub, and half-shaft to the press!
