Does anyone know how the wood rim on the steering wheels were finished when they were originally made. Were they varnished or stained and poly coated (assuming that poly coatings were available in that year). Any insight would be appreciated

Steve; Ive been a pro woodworker all my working life and the best thing I've found for somethig like a wood wheel is Salad Bowl Finish by General Finshes. drys very fast and several coats should be used. Gives a nice glow to the wood and you can refinish easly. shoot me an email and as I live in your area I'll be glad to give you some or help you do it. It worked a treat on my 66' E. I have a NOS wood wheel for an XKE and it has no finish on it, just bare wood. I showed it to a wood worker friend of mine and he just said, "What were they thinking?" Bought from a local Jag dealer years ago and not used, still has the part number on the back. Still, i'd put something on it if only to avoid splinters.
