I Want to change the speedometer cluster on my 1993 XJS from KM/hr to Miles/hr. I am entering the USA from Canada and must convert to Mile from KM. Can anyone advise the cheapest way to do this?

I have access to a 1992 speedometer cluster but do NOT know if it will exchange. If it would exchange my problems would be half solved. Can anyone help?

David: We should probably continue this off site: my address is V12-VDPatShaw.CA (however would I come up with that?), but in answer to your question, I know that they are interchangeable because the 92 xj6 (Series IV) is identical in every way except for trim, with the 93 Series IV. All the parts are interchangeable, much as all the parts of the Series III cars are interchangeable. I am n sure how long it would take to change out the instrument pack. On the Series III changing the speedometer is a two minute job if you are slow; no doubt things were made more complicated for the Series IV where it is an entire unit.

I had hoped the two clusters were interchangeable. It would seem that Jaquar would want to keep them the same as they already knew that Jaguar was changing for the 1995 model in the near future.

I noticed you have a title of Dr. Is it medical or otherwise? I only use my title when on campus --- I am a retired professor.

How is it that you knew these clusters were interchangeable? Is it a big job to change them---how long will it take a relatively good mechanic to do the exchange?

Yes, you can remove the Canadian instrument pack and replace it directly with the US pack; no changes of any kind are required: all connectors, mounting holes, etc are the same.
For resetting the odometer, I recommend MoMa Instruments in Albuquerque, New Mexico. Their phone is 505 766 6661.

Thank you for your response. However, I need further clarification.

Can I remove the entire Canadian cluster from the dash and replace it with the entire US cluster? Fortunately my dashboard is black and the cluster which is availiable to me is from a 1992 black dashboard. Both the '92 and my '93 are VDPs as well so the wood grain also matches. I do have the serial number of the 1992 Jaguar from whuich the cluster was removed.

My concern is that the electrical connections will match as well as the mounting holes etc.

I also want to "roll back" the US mileage on the intended US replacement cluster by 100K miles because it now reads 141K miles and my car only has 66KiloMeters (which is close to 40K miles). Who can do this "roll back" since it is electronic?

Yes, you can do a straight exchange between the Canadian-market and the US market instrument pack without any further changes. The XJS may be slighly more of an issue than an exchange in a Series III XJ saloon, which is a two minute job. Your trip computer reads in litres per 100 km OR miles per gallon, but they are Imperial gallons. Only the US cars have the computers that read in US gallons, but that is a minor issue.
There should be no problem at all with this exchange since the Candian and US cars are virtually identical except for the metric instruments in the Canadian car.
