Slalom Committee Report to 2004 AGM
Prepared by Steven Weinstein, Chairman
The year 2003 saw the JCNA Slalom program once again finish as an absolute success. Despite a somewhat rocky start resulting from questions about changes in the rules, slaloms across the country welcomed several new classes, including the new light and heavyweight ôStreet Preparedö classes. In all, 22 sanctioned slalom events were held, including events of particular note û the slalom at the Jaguar Challenge Championship in Phoenix, Arizona in May, and the Montreal ClubÆs slalom held at British Invasion in Stowe, Vermont in September. These events brought out several hundred entries with thousands of runs through the standardized course. Once again, Gary Hagopian set a new slalom record at 38.920 seconds. And his daughter, Margo Otey, set a new womenÆs record at 40.370 seconds.
This winter, the Slalom Committee undertook a major re-writing of the slalom rules. Highlights of the changes, which will be submitted to the AGM for approval in March 2004, include clearer definitions of requirements for stock, street prepared and modified classes. We hope that the new systems, which groups modifications making clearer distinctions, will result in more cars moving from modified to street prepared classes. Also, members contemplating changes to their cars can now determine whether they will be placed in street prepared or modified class.
