To Bob Young,
I have a 1999 xj8 vdp. I'm having the exact same problem. I changed my starter and it did'nt help. Did you find the starter issue. How did you correct it, I've read the response u got and the only thing I got with wiggling the shifter was the starter clicking with the movement of the shifter, while holding down the ign.. I don't have a manual. I don't know were the relay is located. The exact one.
Can anyone help.
I realy don't want to bring it to jaguar.

David, I have not known a 12 volt battery to give out 13.8 volts. perhaps you mean 12.5 volts sitting and 13.8 volts with the car running. Poor Bob might be changing the battery for nothing.
Bob, follow George's advice. Do the easy ones first. 1) wiggle the shift lever in park as you are trying to start it. 2) wiggle the key as you are trying to start it. 3) Locate the starter relay, and if possible swap with another.............Good luck...........

I have not checked the battery, but I will. I didn't suspect the battery, because when it connected, it spun the motor just fine, & the motor started right up. But I will check it this evening! Thanks for the suggestions. Bob

Would agree with George, however, and this may sound stupid, but jhave you checked the battery is it putting out 13.8 volts, anything below 11 volts is suspect

For several months sometimes when I go to start, all I get is a click. Usually 2-4 times of turning off the key & trying again, & it will start just fine. Sometimes it will turn just a bit, & I have to retry. Yesterday it totally refused to start. I get a good "click" but nothing else. Suggestions please! Thank you
