What would be the correct jack for a 61 and 63 E-Type. The "Original Jaguar E-Type" shows a photo on page 24 of a Shelly bottle jack that looks similiar to my MGA but must rachet. When was the transition to the later series jack that is similiar to what was used in a series 1 XJ6?
Thanks

Mark,

Thanks the information! I was not aware of Dr. Haddock's book and ordered one yesterday. If you have time to take a photo of your 1963 E-Type jack I would appreciate it. My email address is camfenatmac.com. My 1963 Coupe was built in April and was missing the jack when I purchased the car. Porter's E-Type restorer's guide doesn't have specific information on tools and jacks, his XK book has very detailed information on these items.

Cameron:

According to my 1963 edition of the parts manual, the change-over from the "bottle" jack to the "cantilever" jack was at serial numbers:
850549
877519
860661
886247

From the XKEdata site, this puts the change at around May-July 1962.

Note, this second style jack is NOT like the ones from the early XJ-6's, as it had an integral jack handle, while the later E-types, Series II's specifically, had a jack with a separate handle that gets "misplaced" many times.

Dr. Thomas Haddock has pictures of both types of jacks for the 3.8l E-type in his 6&12 Cylinder Restoration Guide on page 91.

If you don't have that book, let me know, and I'll scan it for you, or send pictures of mine for my late 1963 E-type. Let me know.
