Here's a noise question that pertains to more than just Jags: Why is it that when you shift from Park to Reverse or from Drive to Reverse, there is a frequently a kind of groaning noise in the rear especially when the engine is cold? (I dont notice it so much when it is warm)
There is no such noise when shifting from Park to Drive
In the case of my Jag, the rear shocks were recently replaced, as was the diff. with a completely rebuilt unit. (The noise occurred witht he old diff, too.)
What else could be the cause of the noise? Granted 10-year-old cars can exhibit aches and pains but is there is a way to silence it?
All suggestions -- besides Advil -- welcome.
Thanks.

Might want to check out the rubber "Jurid" coupling that connects the driveshaft to the differential. With age, the rubber cracks and eventually goes away enough to cause a clunk when shifting. U-joints would be a second choice as there are 6 in that model of car. Someone that knows what they are looking for should be able to spot it on a lift, especially if someone is in the car making it do the noise.
