George Marshall has a good idea. why not convert it to R134a? It is much cheaper and the one he mentioned doesn't require changing the dryer or lots of other parts, just the high and low fittings. I've done a few other cars and they are still going. My 92 XJS V12 was already converted when I got it. The other option would be to remove the belt. I couldn't imagine running without A/C permanently. It is soooo hot in mine without the A/C in the summer. I run with it on, even with the top down.
