I had that exact problem with a couple of them. I did manage to get a couple installed (especially one - ammeter - where the bub had burned out). But, since I had the socket depth problem in one, and the other bulbs were still working, I was not inclined to dig too much deeper. I notified the supplier of this problem, but doubt they'll do much about it. See photo attached, taken just this past weekend.
