Quick question: What's the recommended procedure for cleaning the gunk from the carburetor (mine is the HD6 SU type), both inside and out? Any concerns if I soak the metal pieces in degreaser?

Thanks!

First thing DO NO HARM !!!
Please be careful with the parts .
I disassemble carbs one at a time and clean parts with solvent to remove heavy gunk. Then submerge pieces in a carb cleaning solution, available from any parts store. Leave parts for acouplr of hrs and wash off with water pressure from domestic hose. Be carefull not to scatter small pieces all over your shop.

Dry all pieces with compressed air and repeat as necessary.
Buy or down load a set of instructions for re assembly and proceed.
Pay close attention and read instructions twice.
If none of this makes no sence send your carbs out to a reputable service for service. There are many listed under SU on the net.
I sent mine to a gentler an in Victoria B.C. And was impressed.

Ps. I have been doing my own and those of friends for 40 years or so and I did not want to get you in trouble.
There are many pitfalls to be experienced out there as a novice do it yourself but very gratifying to succeed.
Good luck
